Our Story

  1. 1978-1979

The Richards family rescued a business in Pontiac, MI involved in the 'Day Labor Market of Temporary Help' industry. We joined our National Association soon after.

  2. 1979-1982

The industry was growing and by 1979/1980 there were over 350 Temporary Services in the Detroit/Pontiac area. We implemented our first ‘stand alone’ computer system while most competitors were still hand writing everything. The Governor of Michigan recognized Supplemental Staffing for its Small Business Excellence. 1980/1981 felt the effects of the major economy fallout and the number of surviving services dropped to 150 companies, while Supplemental Staffing continued to double in size. We joined an Independent Staffing Group for more relationships to understand the small business industry as well as the National Association of Personnel Consultants.

  3. 1982-1985

Our business worked with every kind of industry. Our desire was to understand each industry we serviced which included joining the Cemetery Association of Michigan for a better working relationship of their specific needs. We believe in giving back to our community that we live and work in, and Supplemental Staffing joined the Optimist Club, Rotary and Kiwanis and became involved in all aspects – officers of the clubs and family participation in the clubs. Supplemental Staffing continued to grow and purchased another service twice our size in 1984. We tripled the size in one year expanding into Northwest Ohio.

  4. 1985-1987

In 1985, the Richards family moved to Toledo, OH and began building the Toledo/NW Ohio region in our new office in downtown Toledo in Fort Industry Square. We continued to give back to the community and by 1986 we were involved with Adopt America which is dedicated to helping place children with special needs in loving homes. We implemented their Annual Christmas Parties for the children and their new families. We joined the Ohio Staffing Services Association.

  5. 1987-1990

By 1987, we had out-grown our office and moved from downtown Toledo to the suburbs (Franklin Park Mall Area.) We started Volleyball tournaments for staff. 1988 brought us a new achievement. We were awarded the City of Toledo’s first contract with a Temporary Staffing Company and we began our Halloween Tradition of visiting clients, schools and daycares till 9/11. 1989 gave us the opportunity to raise donations for Crossroads (children needing help during a crisis) and we started Baseball teams for staff.

  6. 1990-1992

By 1990, we began to implement multi-state employment contracts, asked our family to participate in upgrading our computer application to a network environment, and establish an elaborate website, our staff became active in Toastmasters for better interaction with clients and employees, fishing trips with staff and we began our sponsor relationship for Big Brothers, Big Sisters Bowling. Involvement with schools has always been important to us; in 1991 we implemented Interact (Rotary’s Student Group) into Sylvania Schools and took small Jet weekend flights with staff.

  7. 1992-1995

1992 we participated in The New WorkForce Program and Golf Tournaments for our staff. 1993 we became a member of the University of Toledo’s Family Business Center and we participated in our local Law Day activities. 1994 we ventured into our overseas contracts for employment service and we achieved ASA Certifications for staff.

  8. 1995-1998

We introduced on-going Mock Interviews with Sylvania Schools in 1995. 1996 brought us into owning a manufacturing business as well as continuing in our staffing business. 1997 we became a staffing vendor for Bowling Green State University and opened our office in Bowling Green and we participated in Dale Carnegie Training for our staff.

  9. 1998-2000

1998 we chose to begin Next Wave Training to offer classes to our employees to expand their skills for our clients; we donated funds to Sylvania Schools Media Centers For Purchase of Reference Internet Libraries for all 12 Schools and we received UT’s Family Business Award. 1999 we received the Humane Society Award, participated in Final Four and we earned our International Standards Organization (ISO) Certification

  10. 2000-2003

We moved our corporate office to the Southwyck area in Toledo in 2000 and began our long term relationship purchasing Girl Scout Cookies for Clients. 2001 Malcolm became Chairman of Arts Commission and joined the Board for the Toledo Opera. 2002 we became a Heartbeat of Toledo sponsor and became involved with our support for Toledo’s local Mom’s House for unwed mothers and babies.

  11. 2003-2005

  12. 2005-2007

  14. 2010-2012

We started the Wauseon, OH Office in 2010 and partnered with Foreign Exchange Students from UT, participated with Iron Chef’s Newest Winner for a Fundraiser Dinner, implemented Ice Cream Socials at our Clients location for all employees, received the Community Service Award Diverse Supplier of the Year, we were recognized by Great Lakes Consortium for International Training and Development and we were recognized by Harbor Behavioral for our contributions. 2011 We started our Taylor, MI Office, we received ASA’s Recognition Award, continued supporting Sylvania Schools Walk-a-thon and we joined TempNet, another independent staffing association.

  21. 2020-2021

Amidst COVID, we still acknowledged and celebrated our 42 anniversary, albeit in a smaller, safer way. And while the pandemic made life harder for everyone, we were at least still able to have some fun with the mask requirement during Halloween.

  22. 2021-2022

We once again were sponsors for the Northwest Ohio Prayer Breakfast/Dinner, this time as a Signature Sponsor. Our Bowling Green, Ohio office moved in Oct 2021! This office didn't move too far, but it got a huge upgrade. It is now both easy to get to and much bigger!

What people say about us

Feedback is key to understanding your customers

I’ve been working with Supplemental Staffing since 2016 at a long-term placement. The job has been amazing, but the people have been even better. What surprises me the most is how easy they seemed to find me a job. And not only was the job a great fit for my work ethic, it also fit my personality quite well! After a simple conversation with them over what I am interested in and what skills I had at the time, I was able to quickly fill out a form and they had a pretty good idea of what I would like. Soon after, I interviewed for a fun placement and got a great job! They handle my benefits/insurance and pay without ever having an issue. I really think that they help people establish themselves in an industry. I almost see them as more of a career builder than a staffing company.

Griffin Ball

I want to thank Lisa Dison and Supplemental Staffing for placing me so quickly after my move from Indianapolis back to the Toledo area. I have been able to thrive and move up very quickly in my new career path and I owe a lot of that to Supplemental for helping me find the perfect company that matches my skill set. I have officially become a full-time employee where they placed me, and I am grateful to continue on my successful career path. I feel blessed to have been employed by Supplemental Staffing during my transitional period. I have/will recommend Supplemental Staffing to all my family and friends who are looking for various types of job opportunities.

Stephanie M Lopez

I was hired recently through Supplemental Staffing in Toledo. I would highly recommend Supplemental Staffing to anyone that’s willing to make a change in their life and meet great people in the work force. Not only are they changing my life for the better, but I also met a strong and understanding team. I just wanted to let everyone know that in life, people need support like Supplemental Staffing who have patience, understanding, strength and heart. I know that no matter what your circumstances are in life (Good or Bad) it’s all about working for good people and good companies. It’s just amazing how Supplemental Staffing works with their employees in finding each person a job that they think would fit that person’s personality. They don’t just place people anywhere. I believe that they have a good sense of people from the start and quickly know what jobs will be suitable for you. Thank you Supplemental!

Supplemental, thank you so much for your time today! While calling around trying to find an employment service, I had very different results. The first place I called was recommended to me by a friend. That experience is best described as signing up for the military. Very rushed, to the point and zero warmth if you will. Needless to say, they were not for me. The second agency referred me to a different location as they would be better able to provide me with what I was looking for. Completely fair and helpful. I called them and had to leave a message. I never received a call back. Then I called and got you on the phone. I knew when we spoke the other day, you were going to be a "good fit" for me. You were kind, you listened and to my delight, you remembered me today along with the details of my call.

I am hoping for two things. One, is that we have an amazing, productive relationship making us both good money and happy clients. The second, is that your boss sees this and rewards you with a raise as you are such a great fit for your job!
